Basepaws

Lately I’ve been seeing DNA kits everywhere on the internet and magazines and television.  You can get DNA test for people, dogs, and yes even your cats now. I did a DNA kit for one of our dogs years ago and it was so Interesting on getting his results and finding out he was 100% Chihuahua. Below you’ll find some information on Basepaws and how it works out. There will be another updated post so keep an eye out for that I am just waiting for the results.

The CatKit : I received a envelope to mail the samples back to, 2 adhesive strips on a folded card with instructions. I kind of wish I would have got a swab to swab in her mouth instead of the tape. Because I can tell she was a little uncomfortable when removing the tape from her fur. I know she did not like it at all because she didn’t want nothing to do with us for a while. After we took the strips off her you can see lots of little black dots and they were the routes to her hair. ( Pictures Coming in updated post.

From there site: Your cat’s health is shaped by 3 main factors: Nutrition, Environment, and Genetics. By understanding all three, you can rovide your pet with the ultimate cat care. Basepaws is the first cat care company built around Genetics.  Basepaws gets DNA from your cat’s hair and cheek cells. Most of the hair DNA comes from the living part of the fur — the follicle that is closest to the skin.

How does this work?

Simple! After you receive your kit, collect hair from your cat using the adhesives provided (or via a buccal swab sample if your cat is hairless). Mail the sample back to us in the provided pre-paid envelope, and we will notify you that we have received your sample. We will be able to provide the report 2 to up to 6 months after we receive the kit, and we are trying to shorten that time as much as possible. Please bear with us as we run our first few batches of tests, and thank you for being our first customers! Long-term, we plan to provide the results within 4 weeks. Every sample helps us create the biggest database of feline genetic data and will contribute to discoveries in cat health.

A little explanation why I did not post pictures of my cat in this post and that is because I didn’t want anybody to see what kind of cat / cats I have and the color they are. So that is because I didn’t want anybody to see what kind of cat I did the DNA test on to see how accurate the results are.
