How it Sharpens

The Classroom Friendly Supplies Pencil Sharpener gives a very smooth angle which leaves the pencil lead much longer/sharper than others I remember. This allows us to sharpen less often. I did wonder if the longer lead might be a weakness, but it seems to break only if one pushes hard. In fact, we’ve had less breakage than we experienced with our old sharpeners that compromised the wood around the lead. When sharpening to a very fine point, the longer lead may crack off a bit of the tip, but this is not problematic. I apply less pressure when writing, as it is a pleasure to use such a sharp pointed lead. The length/sharpness of the point also gives my artistic daughter the ability to do finer work. She says she has more flexibility with shading and blending using the edge/side of the lead.
The Classroom Friendly Supplies Pencil Sharpener does sharpen differently depending on the pencil’s shape.

  • With standard hexagonal pencils, you know your pencil is sharp when there is not as much resistance in the handle as you turn.
  • The sharpener continues to “eat” round pencils as long as the handle turns. I find it a good idea to count an approximate number of handle turns, checking the pencil.

Other Sharpener Specifics

Anyone else with young testosterone-laden denizens will probably relate to this. In less than a week, our Classroom Friendly Supplies Pencil Sharpener met disassembly in practically every way. Luckily, the handle is riveted on, not screwed on with hard-to match screws like other rotary models I have owned.
No instructions come with Classroom Friendly Supplies Pencil Sharpener, and it took me a while to find instruction videos on the website. A pencil sharpener should be pretty straight forward, but I’ve had to figure out a few things.

One thing everyone needs is a good pencil sharpener.  My niece/nephew love to play school and need a pencil sharpener pretty much every day! So when Classroom Friendly Supplies offered to let me review their pencil sharpener I was thrilled!

Classroom Friendly Supplies is a company started by an elementary school teacher who wanted a better sharpener.

Here is a little blurb about her:

I am an elementary school teacher and the owner of Classroom Friendly Supplies. I first started selling these sharpeners after realizing that many fellow teachers were also completely fed up with the loud and inefficient pencil sharpeners that they had in their classrooms. I have thousands of happy customers and the feedback has all been consistently the same and extremely positive.

As teachers are obviously my biggest customers, I gladly accept school purchase orders. Please check this out in my School Purchase Orders tab above.

Do all homeschoolers have a pencil sharpener saga? I do. It’s scattered with a dead electric sharpener, old rotary pencil sharpener parts, and single-blade sharpeners that never stay sharp, technically adding them to my list of “consumable” school supplies. Mechanical pencils are not the hoped for “silver bullet” either. Either they are not as durable as they once were or we are just especially hard on them. Enter the Classroom Friendly Supplies Pencil Sharpener. Surely my crew of homeschoolers can put it to the test. Receiving it, we immediately begin our routine midyear catch-up of sharpening all of our pencils and colored pencils. I already appreciate its staying power.

First off I love the look of the sharpener I received.  It looks vintage and the colors are so cute!  I noticed right off how well built and heavy this sharpener is.  It is well weighted which is important because it can be used free standing so that you don’t have to anchor it to a table or wall.  I also really like the see through shaving receptacle so you know when it is full without having to open it.

What is really neat is you don’t have to hold the pencil in while you sharpen it.  This is great for small kids who are still working on their small motor skills.

I like that this sharpener is well built, attractive, easy to use, quite, and affordable at $24.99.  This would be great for home-schoolers, classrooms, or as a gift for a teacher in your life.
